Replacement Lawn Mower Belts - A Basic Guide to Finding the Right Lawn Mower Belt
Finding the right size replacement lawnmower belt is really not that hard. No matter what size, or brand of lawnmower you own, you can usually find a replacement belt with a little research. If you are the type of person who keeps all the documents when you buy something new just look it up in your owners manual.
You will need to know which belt you are dealing with as there can be several belts involved in the operation of a power mower. If it is a mower belt, it will be down on the deck above the blades. A drive belt will be under the mower, and could go back under the seat. If the mower won't move when placed in gear then you know it is a drive belt.
As a last resort, you can take the old belt with you to match to the new one, but this does not always work. A difference of one inch, more or less, can cause your belt to not function properly. The best remedy is to clean your mower until you find the serial numbers. They can be on a tag attached to the body of the machine. Copy all the numbers and look for the one designated as model number.
While you have the mower clean, inspect the other belt, or belts. It is not a bad idea to go ahead and replace all of them while the machine is clean and set up for being worked on. Inspect your blades as this is a good time to replace, or sharpen them. If you don't have time for all that, it is still a good idea to get spare parts and keep them handy.
If you don't want to spend extra money at this time, write down the model numbers of the lawn mower belts you will need in the future. Keep the model number of your machine with this information. Be sure to put all the part numbers in a safe place, so you will have them for next time.
