How to Change a Chainsaw Chain

When you use a chainsaw, inevitably you will have to change the chainsaw chain. Chains will stretch with use, and eventually they will wear out. They also need to be sharpened, which eventually make the chain teeth thin, requiring replacement. If you are a new chainsaw user, this may be intimidating at first, but with a little instruction and care, it will soon be second nature to you. You should consult your owner's manual for specific instructions, especially any safety concerns, but the basic instructions are provided here.

Your chainsaw probably came with a tool called a scrench, which is sort of a combo screwdriver and wrench shaped like a T, which will be the proper size for this task. If you have misplaced this tool, you will need a flat head screwdriver and a socket set.

First, you will remove the two nuts holding the case cover on, then remove the cover assembly. Once the cover assembly is removed, use a screwdriver to reduce the chain tension. Before you remove the old chain, look at the placement of the teeth. You'll need to make sure the teeth on the new chainsaw chain are facing the same way. Now that your chain tension is loose, you can remove the old chain. Replace the new chain, again making sure the teeth face the correct direction, and tighten it. There should be about a sixteenth inch play between the bar and the chain.

Now that you have the new chain in place, it's time to replace the side cover and the two nuts. Next you should oil the chain and bar before you start the chainsaw. Keep in mind that a new chainsaw blade stretches easily in the beginning, so you will need to tighten it frequently.
